Wales then announced that Wikipedia would not display advertisements, and changed Wikipedia's domain from to. Ĭiting fears of commercial advertising and lack of control, users of the Spanish Wikipedia forked from Wikipedia to create Enciclopedia Libre in February 2002. The English Wikipedia passed the mark of two million articles on September 9, 2007, making it the largest encyclopedia ever assembled, surpassing the Yongle Encyclopedia made during the Ming dynasty in 1408, which had held the record for almost 600 years. Nupedia and Wikipedia coexisted until the former's servers were taken down permanently in 2003, and its text was incorporated into Wikipedia. Language editions were created beginning in March 2001, with a total of 161 in use by the end of 2004. The domains (later redirecting to ) and were registered on January 12, 2001, and January 13, 2001, respectively. On January 10, 2001, Sanger proposed on the Nupedia mailing list to create a wiki as a "feeder" project for Nupedia. Wales is credited with defining the goal of making a publicly editable encyclopedia, while Sanger is credited with the strategy of using a wiki to reach that goal. Nupedia was initially licensed under its own Nupedia Open Content License, but before Wikipedia was founded, Nupedia switched to the GNU Free Documentation License at the urging of Richard Stallman. Its main figures were Bomis CEO Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger, editor-in-chief for Nupedia and later Wikipedia. It was founded on March 9, 2000, under the ownership of Bomis, a web portal company. Wikipedia began as a complementary project for Nupedia, a free online English-language encyclopedia project whose articles were written by experts and reviewed under a formal process. Various collaborative online encyclopedias were attempted before the start of Wikipedia, but with limited success. Wikipedia founders Jimmy Wales (left) and Larry Sanger (right) Articles on breaking news are often accessed as a source of frequently updated information about those events. While the reliability of Wikipedia was frequently criticized in the 2000s, it has improved over time, receiving greater praise in the late 2010s and early 2020s, having become an important fact-checking site. It has been criticized for exhibiting systemic bias, particularly gender bias against women and ideological bias. Wikipedia has been praised for its enablement of the democratization of knowledge, extent of coverage, unique structure, culture, and reduced degree of commercial bias. Wikipedia's combined editions comprise more than 61 million articles, attracting around 2 billion unique device visits per month and more than 15 million edits per month (about 5.8 edits per second on average) as of July 2023. ![]() ![]() The alternative would be an unwieldy bunch of keys and spending a great deal of time and effort in finding the right key for a lock every time you wanted to access it. If you have a number of different locks that need to be accessed by different personnel, for example office furniture, master key sets are the only practical solution. When the key is inserted in the lock, notches push the pins up to different levels, the master key pushes these pins up to exactly the right point for the two pins to come together and line up exactly where the cylinder and the housing come together. When the upper pins are in this position, the lock does not turn as the pins are bound to the housing. When there is no key in the lock, the lower pin is completely inside the plug, the upper pin is halfway between the plug and the housing. These pins are kept in position by springs at the top of the shaft. This comprises a series of small pins which vary in length and are in pairs, resting in a shaft which runs through a central cylinder plug. Master keys are commonly based on what is known as a pin and tumbler design. There is usually nothing special about the key itself, rather the type of lock that it fits into, which has been specially designed to open with 2 keys, the master and what is known as the 'change key', a key that can open only one specific lock. It may seem like magic, but master keys are actually a simple feat of engineering. Typically they are required by people such as landlords and office managers. There is also a rule of thumb that the PSU runs best when it’s at 50% capacity, but that is a different topic that should be looked at on a case-by-case basis. Be careful because with great power comes a greater risk of overheating. However, if you’re building a gaming rig with an RTX 3080/3090 or want to future-proof it (which is almost impossible), you should choose a more powerful PSU. In any case, it’s safe to say that your machine will be properly powered with a good 650 watts PSU. An example of such a GPU is the GeForce RTX 2080 Ti LIGHTNING Z. These are usually the manufacturers’ highest-end models made to provide the best possible cooling and overclocking. In even rarer cases, enthusiast GPUs require three 8-pin connectors. In addition, you still need to power the CPU ( another big energy consumer) and the rest of your PC’s components. By adding the numbers together, we get a total of 375 watts, which is an extreme amount. There are even some exceptional cases where the GPU will have two 8-pin connectors. As a result, it has a maximum power consumption of 170 watts. For example, NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 3060 has both types of connectors. The most power-hungry graphics cards come with a 6-pin and an 8-pin connector. If the GPU requires more than 150 watts, it will come with an 8-pin connector or two 6-pin connectors.Īs always, there are exceptions. 8-Pin Connector An 8-pin connectorĪlthough the math might not seem right when compared to the 6-pin connector, the 8-pin connector can deliver 150 watts to a graphics card. The terms “PCI Express cables” or “PEG cables” (for PCI Express Graphics) can also be used to describe 6-pin connectors. As 150 watts will be enough for most mid-range cards, these usually feature the 6-pin power connector. This means the graphics card will use the PCI Express x16 slot and draw power directly from the PSU (Power Supply Unit).ĭespite the fact that 150 watts are enough for most graphics cards, high-end cards such as NVIDIA’s RTX 3080 require more than 320 watts and system power of 750 watts. This connector can supply the GPU with an additional 75 watts of energy. As none of these GPUs have a lot of processing power, they don’t need more than 75 watts of power. Here are a few examples of GPUs that don’t require external power: GT 1030, GTX 1050 2GB variant, RX 550, RX 460, and many others. Some feature multiple PCI Express x16 slots in order to connect more GPUs, but, as previously mentioned, this increases the power requirement. Motherboards come with the aforementioned PCI Express x16 slot that can provide a maximum of 75 watts of power. ![]() |
